In the early days of the district, the Agriculturalists and Pastoralists felt a need to be able to exhibit their produce to the local community and beyond. In 1878 they met and formed the A & P Society and proceeded to hold their first Show Day. It was a resounding success and became an annual event. A Horticultural Society had also been formed by another group and later became incorporated into the A & P Society and the name was changed to the A P & H Society in 1902. (See History page for more details.)

The competitive nature of the Show’s exhibitors caused the quality of the local Produce to escalate at an amazing rate. The quality brought both prosperity and reputation to the district. The same competitiveness overflowed into other Show activities and resulted in ever increasing patronage from both near and far. It was soon to be the social event of the year for the district.

Over the past 132+ years, successive committees of the Crookwell AP & H Society have continued the tradition of promoting the region’s produce, businesses and crafts through competitions and exhibitions in an entertaining and friendly environment.

Since its inception, the Crookwell A P & H Society (a “not for profit” based incorporated society) has invested heavily in the society’s assets. It is believed to be one of only three Show Societies in NSW to own its Showground. According to the author of “Uplands Pastures - The History of Crookwell District”, (William A. Bayley in 1950), he states that when the land for the current showground was purchased and developed in 1927, “it (the Showground) would serve Crookwell for all time.”

We all know that rural industries and economies are in challenging times. Apart from the current drought, there is the urban sprawl that is consuming valuable agricultural land; subdivision of prime land holdings into lifestyle properties; an imbalance of rural incomes against all other incomes and ‘sophisticated’ forms of entertainment. Show Societies are also faced with a heavy burden of Insurance costs. In some cases forcing the cessation of major events (like Trotting) or even the ability to stage a show. What would life be like without a good old fashioned Country Show where you can have fun competing, mingling or just watching keen competition? The Crookwell A P & H Society is committed to maintaining and advancing the standard of the Country Show we can all remember, for the benefit of ALL the community.

“When the going gets tough - the tough get going!” Crookwell A P & H Society, through its members and voluntary committee, are striving to make the Crookwell Show the best of the Zone. We are well supported by entries from around the state in many events, which is a good measure of the Show’s status. Many competitors go on from the Crookwell Show to find success at the Sydney Royal Easter Show which is held just six weeks later.

Like the Crookwell Showground, the A P & H Society will endeavour to “serve Crookwell for all time!”
